It’s easier said than done, but taking good care of ourselves allows us to offer the best version of ourselves to those we serve. Emotional fatigue and burnout are common consequences of neglecting our own needs while extending support to others. But the double-edged sword here is that our students are internalizing this self-sacrificing, over-extending behavior, too.
Children pick up on everything we do, so modeling good self-care routines and healthy boundaries is just as crucial as explicitly teaching students these skills. Between the ages of 0-7, children understand the world through their primary caregivers, so we owe it to students to practice all the great things we preach, like advocating for our own needs.
